Why did Laura Loomer leak that deposition?

Despite not having the typical clout associated with the MAGA influencer world—high follower counts, substantial political power, or a wide range of internet platforms—Laura Loomer remains a powerful force. She has the unique distinction of having influenced Donald Trump to fire over a dozen members of his administration for allegedly betraying MAGA values, a feat unmatched by her peers. To grasp her method of operation, one only needs to look at her latest power move, marked by self-degradation and controversial slander.

This week, Loomer leaked a private deposition from a lawsuit, where she described why she has posted some extreme claims against her adversaries on social media. This deposition was related to her defamation lawsuit against HBO host Bill Maher, who alleged in a February 2025 episode that Loomer had a sexual relationship with Donald Trump. The focus, however, shifted to the deposition’s content, highlighting her brash allegations: accusing Senator Lindsay Graham of being secretly gay, calling former Vice President Kamala Harris a “DEI skank,” and painting her adversary, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, in a scandalous light.

Loomer staunchly defended her words, both during the deposition—asserting the ridiculousness of her statements—and afterward when the story was covered by Will Sommer in The Bulwark. “I was asked about Lindsey during my deposition so I had to tell the truth. I was under oath,” she tweeted, including a screenshot about her claim regarding Graham’s sexuality.

HBO’s legal team quickly pointed out that Loomer’s actions likely breached several laws by sharing the confidential deposition, resulting in its immediate resealing. Loomer argued that her aim was to display how successful her testimony was, claiming the leftist firm representing HBO wanted it sealed for that reason. However, this claim is dubious, given potential legal repercussions and the apparent absurdity of Loomer’s statements during the legal proceedings.

Loomer termed this episode as another case of “Loomering,” a phrase she uses for her online harassment tactics. This strategy finds its roots in her past work with Project Veritas, notorious for capturing media and academic figures making statements that could be manipulated as anti-conservative. Loomer has since advanced her approach, making herself the focal point to drive her narrative.

The repeated embarrassment only seems to bolster her “Loomering” impact: the long-term disregard for shame, as long as internet attention persists. She acknowledged this, saying, “I wake up everyday to another hit piece. It’s because I am effective and it threatens a lot of people.” Furthermore, the internet’s lasting nature means that even a resealed deposition won’t prevent others from saving and sharing its sensational parts. While Loomer might be caught recounting her tweets and defending drastic claims, she has nonetheless succeeded in having multiple White House officials dismissed.

While it remains to be seen whether her influence extends beyond Trump’s daily capriciousness, Loomer’s unnerving gift for being an internet bully remains effective as long as she has allies in the administration, who leak her the insider info she publicly uses to humiliate others. (As she said to HBO’s lawyers, her friends in the White House told her that Graham was gay.) And as long as the storm she creates can grab Trump’s attention, he will most likely keep picking up her calls.
