TEUTOPOLIS, Ill. (WCIA) — A man suspected of being armed was apprehended on Saturday afternoon following an extended standoff at a Teutopolis apartment he is accused of illegally entering.

Effingham County Sheriff Paul F. Kuhns reported that deputies responded “mid-morning” to calls about a man experiencing an emotional crisis at 200 S Smith Street from Friday night into Saturday morning. It was also reported that the man might be armed.

Kuhns informed WCIA that the man allegedly forced entry into a neighboring apartment by breaking down the door. The apartment’s occupants heard him breaking in through the back, and luckily, they managed to exit via the front door.

Once inside, the man barricaded himself in the apartment and refused to communicate with police. During the standoff, officers were uncertain if he was armed.

Police were able to enter the apartment around 2:20 p.m. and arrest the man “without too much incident.” Thankfully, there were no injuries to either the officers or the suspect in this situation.

On scene, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Illinois State Police and Effingham City Police.

“I’m very grateful and pleased with how well our agencies worked together,” Kuhns said.

Although no weapons were found on the suspect when arrested, weapons were discovered in his apartment. There was also property damage reported at the apartment where he was apprehended.

The man is now at the Effingham County Jail and will have a pre-trial hearing on Monday. Kuhns expects additional information on this incident to be released that day as well.

WCIA reached out to State Police for additional information but did not receive an immediate response. There is no further information at this time.
