MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — With temperatures on the rise in Central Illinois, ensuring sun safety has become essential. The Macon County Health Department is offering the community some vital reminders during Summer Sun Safety Month to underscore the importance of sun protection.

The health department said that just by making a few changes, you can reduce your risk of sun-related problems.

Firstly, bear in mind that excessive tanning poses risks. It’s crucial to avoid harmful UV rays from both the sun and tanning beds. Just a single session in a tanning bed can significantly elevate your risk of skin cancer. Particularly for individuals under 35, the health department highlighted that using a tanning bed increases the melanoma risk by 59%, and using them for over a decade can increase your risk by 125%. Instead, the health department recommends using a self-tanner if you wish to achieve a tanned look.

You should apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all exposed skin. Make sure to reapply every two hours to stay covered up.

The health department also emphasized the importance of staying hydrated in the sun. Consuming lots of water is vital in preventing dehydration, while attention should be paid to warning signs such as thirst, fatigue, or dizziness.
