A woman who was picking her mother up from work was killed after becoming entangled in a road rage incident in which she had no involvement, Arizona authorities report.
Yarely Ashley Hermosillo, 27, was in the passenger seat of her boyfriend’s vehicle when they went to pick up her mother from work on Saturday. Her 4-year-old son was also in the car. They were stopped at a red light around 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of W. Camelback Road and N. 51st Avenue in Glendale, a city located approximately nine miles northwest of Phoenix, when a gunshot suddenly cracked the air, sending a bullet through the front windshield and striking Hermosillo in the face, according to the police.
Hermosillo’s boyfriend sped to the nearest hospital, but she did not survive her injuries.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, detectives later uncovered that the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Jesus Preciado Dousten, was involved in a road rage episode with another driver.
The other driver informed the police that he was traveling down the road when a pickup truck suddenly pulled out in front of him, causing him to hit the brakes, as per police accounts. He honked his horn, maneuvered around the pickup, and stopped at a light in the far right lane. The truck, driven solely by Dousten, pulled up next to him in the center lane, police stated. The driver shouted at Dousten to “watch where he was going.” Dousten allegedly produced a gun and, in Spanish, said, “you want some of this.”
Subsequently, Dousten fired in a “random direction” out of his driver’s side window, as per the complaint. The shot struck Hermosillo’s car, which was to the left of Dousten. Witnesses indicated that Dousten seemed drunk, as noted in the affidavit.
Detectives managed to identify Dousten’s vehicle through street cameras and arrested him on Sunday. He acknowledged driving the pickup but asked for an attorney before elaborating on the alleged road rage episode. Officers recovered the suspected murder weapon at a friend’s residence of Dousten’s. The friend informed the officers that Dousten came to his home on Saturday night and “appeared upset,” stated the affidavit. Dousten reportedly confessed to his friend about being involved in a road rage incident and shooting away from the man he was having an altercation with, which resulted in hitting a person in another vehicle.
Dousten stands accused of second-degree murder and aggravated assault, among other charges. The suspect also was involved in another road rage incident about two months ago in which he punched another driver in the face, cops said.
“We really wanted to bring this family justice and we were so pleased we were able to get this guy off the street,” Glendale police spokesman Jose Santiago told local ABC affiliate KXNV.
Hermosillo had some 100,000 followers on her food- and recipe-focused TikTok page. Her family started a GoFundMe account to raise funds for her funeral.
“Yarely was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a beautiful soul whose light touched everyone who knew her,” the page reads. “She leaves behind her husband and their 4-year-old son, who now face an unimaginable loss. Yarely’s greatest joy in life was being a mother, and she poured her heart into caring for her little boy.”
