Augusta commissioners raid reserves instead of raising taxes to offset budget deficit

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Augusta’s city officials decided not to impose another tax hike on residents, having already increased charges for streetlights and garbage collection.

“We have a significant amount of work to do, and now is not the right time to impose further tax increases. There’s no need to raise property taxes,” said Commissioner Catherine Smith Rice.

Commissioners voted to roll back property tax rates for this year, even with the city facing a nearly $11 million dollar shortfall.

In a move to address the financial shortfall, commissioners opted to use reserve funds despite acknowledging it isn’t the ideal long-term answer.

“Is the climate with the streetlights fees not to do taxes?”

“Yes, it’s a solution, but dipping into reserves poses risks. We need a plan for unforeseen events,” stated Commissioner Francine Scott.

This decision covers the current year, but fiscal challenges linger with an $8 million deficit looming over next year’s budget. Some city leaders admit that without a tax increase, they may need to make difficult budget cuts.

“I am opposed to cutting jobs,” said Commissioner Tony Lewis. “Instead, consider eliminating some unfilled positions.”

City leaders still have to give final approval of the tax rate, that comes in early September then work on next year’s budget and where to make cuts will be underway.
