Arrest

On August 14, 2025, Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Hogan Flanagan and her friend Veronica Hannan were apprehended after not leaving The Clarke Cooke House in Newport, Rhode Island, as reported by the Newport Police Department.

The police responded to the scene at 24 Bannister’s Wharf around 9:51 p.m. on Aug. 14 because of patrons refusing to vacate the premises. Upon their arrival, Newport Police Department officers were met with requests to turn their body cameras off, with Flanagan insisting, “I want you to turn your body cam off. Protocol is that you turn it off if a citizen requests.”

In the video, another woman stated, “She’s a lawyer.” Flanagan, who was wearing a pink dress, was recognized as the state’s assistant attorney general, and a man present asserted he was her husband.

“I’m an AG,” Flanagan said as she was handcuffed. “Buddy, you’re going to regret this.”

According to the statement, an investigation was conducted, leading to the arrest of the two individuals. Devon Hogan faced charges of willful trespass and received a district court summons. Veronica Hannan was charged with willful trespass, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, leading to her arraignment in court.

The attorney general’s office is examining the situation but has refrained from commenting, citing it as a personnel matter. Newport police clarified their body camera policy, stating they only need to turn off cameras if requested by a victim or witness, not suspects.
