Who will be Illini's starting kick returner? Bielema says there is a front runner

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – The Illinois football team is looking strong for the 2024 season, retaining most of their key players from their impressive 10-win run. As a result, there aren’t many open starting positions to fill.

That said, the team will be seeking a new athlete to take over kick returning duties in 2025. Previously, Kenari Wilcher was responsible for the majority of kickoff returns in 2024, managing 11 returns for a total of 258 yards.

Wilcher transferred to Florida A&M following the conclusion of his sophomore season.

Several players have been auditioning for this role during practice sessions. Coach Bret Bielema has recently suggested that one player might have an edge in the competition for the position in the opening week.

“If I was a betting man I’d say Ca’Lil Valentine would be probably our starter,” Bielema said on Monday.

Valentine, a sophomore running back, had 212 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards as a true freshman in 2024.

Bielema says Valentine has no completely locked up the job.

“That one is still a little open for take,” he said.

A few other candidates up for the kick return role are Hank Beatty, Aidan Laughery, Mac Resetich, and Mario Sanders, each looking to make an impact.

Among these, Beatty stands out with notable experience in returns, but not specifically in kickoffs. Going into his second season, Beatty is set to continue as the main punt returner for the Illini, having taken on this responsibility last season. In 2024, he led the Big Ten, averaging 14.1 yards per punt return.
