MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) announced that a lockdown was lifted Thursday afternoon following reports of an active shooter on the premises.

All classes and activities were canceled for the remainder of the day.

UPDATE (12:45 p.m.): UTC officials say law enforcement has completed a search of campus buildings, and no threat has been identified at this time.

The lockdown remains in effect until police fully clear the area, but there is no active danger confirmed.

UPDATE (12:30 p.m.): The Tennessee Highway Patrol stated that their Chattanooga division, along with the Tennessee Office of Homeland Security, responded to the scene at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) campus. Officers are collaborating with local authorities to address reports of a potential active shooter.

UTC officials reiterated that the campus continues to be under lockdown while police carry out searches of university buildings. “Everyone on the UTC campus should stay on lockdown. Do not leave unless directed by law enforcement. Police are currently searching campus facilities,” the university shared via social media.

Authorities say they are still gathering facts and will provide more official information soon.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) campus was secured after reports surfaced of a potential active shooter situation near the University Center and Library.

The Chattanooga Police Department (CPD) released a warning this morning advising the public to stay clear of the area. “UTC Campus is currently under LOCKDOWN. Please refrain from going to the UTC Campus until further notice,” CPD mentioned in a social media post.

UTC officials verified the incident, posting an emergency alert: “UTC ALERT: Possible active shooter in the University Center or Library. Run. Hide. Fight. More details to follow.”

Chattanooga Police later updated that officers are working closely with UTC Police to confirm reports of shots fired. At this time, no victims have been located.

The university has urged students, staff, and faculty on campus to shelter in place until the all-clear is given.

Emergency notifications are being distributed through official university channels and social media.
