Specialized police have detonated a hazardous device discovered on a well-frequented beach in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Footage captures the moment the device is detonated on the deserted beach near the shoreline. The Department of Defence has identified the device as a “marine marker,” a pyrotechnic tool producing smoke and flames that is typically utilized in search and rescue missions, anti-submarine activities, and maritime studies.

The device was exploded on the sand at Peregian Beach today. (Nine)

“Defence can confirm a Marine marker was located in the vicinity of Peregian Beach, Sunshine Coast on 22 August 2025,” a spokesperson said.

“Defence assessed the unexploded ordnance (UXO) at the scene. The UXO was assessed as unsafe for transport and were disposed of onsite.

“The Defence department often collaborates with state and territory law enforcement to safely recover or dispose of suspected unexploded military ordnance found in public spaces.”

It is not clear how the device came to be on the beach or how it was found.

Authorities declared an emergency under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA), securing a substantial area around the location of the device at 12:30 pm.

The PSPA has since been revoked and the area declared safe.

The restricted area included David Low Way from Podargus Parade to Woodland Drive and covered Martin Street, Avocet Street, Peregian Esplanade, Parakeet Crescent, Egrer Street, Teal Street, Currawong Crescent, Osprey Avenue, Tern Street, Garnet Street, Ibis Street, Pelican Street, and Kingfisher Drive.
