A man from Washington, D.C., attended a gender reveal party, where he brandished an AK-style rifle and began shooting, resulting in the death of one man and the critical injury of another. He is now facing a prison sentence.

Nyjell Outler, 22 years old, received a 24 1/2-year prison sentence for the death of 21-year-old Demetris Johnson and the shooting of Daloni Williams, who was close to having his leg amputated, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. The jury found Outler guilty of voluntary manslaughter while armed and aggravated assault in March.

Outler arrived at the gender reveal event on Madison Street at approximately 7:45 p.m. on March 20, 2021, with a backpack containing an AK-style rifle named Draco. After staying at the event in the driveway for about half an hour, Outler moved away, withdrew the Draco, and returned to where the victims were located. The party also had numerous attendees in the backyard and inside the residence.

“When Daloni Williams approached the defendant with an outstretched arm, seemingly indicating ‘put that away,’ the defendant raised the Draco and shot Daloni Williams twice at close range,” prosecutors stated.

Subsequently, Outler targeted Johnson, who was attempting to flee. He discharged two shots, one hitting Johnson in the back. Johnson was declared dead at the scene by first responders. Williams was transported to the hospital for emergency surgery to preserve his leg, followed by extensive physical rehabilitation.

The convicted individual was previously under GPS monitoring for a prior firearm possession conviction in February 2021. He cut off the monitor and evaded capture for nearly a year, eventually making the U.S. Marshal Service’s Top 15 Most Wanted list. An anonymous tip led to his apprehension in Florida in February 2022.
