Trump disapproval rating spikes to 56%, survey shows

(The Hill) — After seven months into his second White House term, President Trump is experiencing a rise in disapproval ratings among Americans, based on a survey released Friday.

The Economist/YouGov poll indicates that 40% of Americans “strongly or somewhat” endorse Trump’s presidential performance, while 56% “strongly or somewhat” disapprove of his job. Approximately 4% were uncertain when surveyed.

Most Democratic voters disapprove of Trump, while most Republicans approve of his handling of the presidency.

The highest approval for Trump comes from those aged 65 and older, with 48% saying they “strongly or somewhat” approve of his presidency. Conversely, the lowest approval is among individuals aged 18 to 29, where nearly 29% say they “strongly or somewhat” approve of his time in the White House.

The poll also noted that just under a quarter of Americans, 23%, claimed to “strongly approve” of Trump’s presidency, whereas 47% expressed “strong disapproval.” The previous Economist/YouGov poll conducted during President Biden’s tenure revealed that 56% of Americans strongly approved or disapproved of him, with 39% somewhat approving or disapproving.

Ninety-five percent of Americans identifying as “very liberal” have a strong disapproval of Trump, and 72% of those who consider themselves “very conservative” strongly approve of him as president.

An earlier Reuters/Ipsos survey from this month reported that 40% of participants approved of Trump’s presidency, reflecting a 7-point decline since the beginning of his second term.

In the average of surveys from Decision Desk HQ, the president currently has a 45.6 % approval rating and a 51.1% disapproval rating.

A Pew Research Center poll, released in mid-August, found that Trump’s current job approval rating is at 38%.

The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted from August 15-18 among 1,568 U.S. adults. The margin of error was around 3.5 percentage points.
