Mayor Johnson: The People of Chicago Will Rise Up Against Trump's 'Tyranny'

During “The Weekend” on MSNBC, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) expressed that if President Donald Trump were to dispatch the National Guard to Chicago, the residents would rebel against what he termed as “tyranny.”

Co-host Jonathan Capehart read from The Washington Post, noting, “The use of thousands of active duty troops in Chicago has been discussed, albeit unlikely for now. We have seen him previously deploy active duty Marines in Los Angeles. How would Chicago react if the U.S. President deployed active duty military in its streets?”

Johnson responded, “Chicago does not require military occupation; that doesn’t align with our identity. I applaud Mayor Bass and others in Los Angeles for resisting this authoritarian approach. The crux is federal troops lack police power as they don’t undergo the same training as our police officers, preventing them from exercising police authority.”

He added, “The president has spent vast sums, achieving little more than arresting nine individuals in D.C. This showcases his deficiency in understanding urban governance, let alone national leadership. We will unwaveringly pursue legal avenues. However, city residents are prepared to oppose tyranny if necessary. I trust Chicagoans will stand with me as I tirelessly work to safeguard our community.”
