CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) conducted a roundtable discussion at the Champaign Public Library on Saturday to address the implications of the Big Beautiful Bill on Medicaid.

Budzinski pointed out that the bill aims to cut Medicaid expenses by $900 billion, which could result in 15 million Americans losing coverage. In contrast, the White House claims the bill safeguards seniors while addressing “waste” and “fraud.”

Susan Real, the CEO of the East Central Illinois Area Agency on Aging, remarked on the complexities involved, noting that many outcomes remain uncertain.

“I’m not sure lawmakers fully grasp that this change will have significant effects,” Real stated. “Will it lead to no nursing home care, a reduction, or sharing costs with family members? Additionally, the cost of nursing home care is escalating rapidly.”

Real further explained that because nearly 70% of nursing home expenses are funded by Medicaid, as well as numerous operational expenses, the potential changes could seriously impact long-term care facilities.

Ten Central Illinois nursing homes have been identified as at risk as well, according to Budzinski.
