Establishing a smart home security system is crucial, even if you wish you never needed to rely on it. Fortunately, the Kwikset Halo Select, which is our top-rated smart lock, is currently discounted to $259 ($20 off) at retailers like Amazon, Lowe’s, and The Home Depot. This sale represents the first discount for the lock since its debut late last year.

According to her review, Verge critic Jennifer Pattison Tuohy highlighted the Halo Select for offering four ways to unlock it: a traditional key, the Kwikset app, an auto-unlock feature based on location, and a pin code. The straightforward installation process is made easier with comprehensive instructions from Kwikset and a user-friendly app. The lock is compatible out of the box with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Kwikset’s app through cloud services. With a Matter controller and Thread border router, such as the latest Apple TV, a new Echo speaker, or an Eero router, you can connect locally, enabling control through Apple Home or Samsung SmartThings.

Trials showed that utilizing the Halo Select with Matter significantly boosted battery life. However, it required disabling the reliable auto-unlock feature, which automatically unlocks the door upon your approach—a very handy feature. Unfortunately, Matter doesn’t currently accommodate auto-unlock, door sensing, fingerprint recognition, or facial recognition. The auto-unlock necessitates running Kwikset’s app in the background on your phone. Despite needing to balance feature preferences, if you’re looking for a nearly all-encompassing, future-ready smart lock, this remains our first choice.
