Avery Johnson, Kansas State’s Quarterback, had his father and brother publicly apologize after a video of them brawling in Ireland gained widespread attention on social media.

Following the K-State Wildcats’ 24-21 defeat against the Iowa State Cyclones in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin on Saturday, Mark and Anthony Johnson were filmed engaging in a physical fight.

Footage circulating online depicts the two men entangled in a scuffle on the ground while onlookers try to intervene. Eventually, they part ways.

It is not clear why the men were fighting.

In a joint statement to the college sports website On3 on Sunday, Mark and Anthony Johnson expressed their “sincere apologies” for their behavior after Saturday’s game.

The statement read, “Trivial disagreements turned into an unnecessary altercation. We have mended our differences and fully acknowledge our actions. We have apologized to our family and extend our apologies to Kansas State University, its alumni, and its fans.”

The Johnson men said they regret the incident, “have learned from it, and are committed to ensuring it doesn’t happen again.”

NBC News has reached out to Mark, Anthony and Avery Johnson for comment.

Avery Johnson, of Wichita, is a junior at Kansas State University. He has been playing for the university’s football team for three seasons.

Kansas State’s next game is Saturday against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.
