(WJW) – A popular snack item is being pulled from shelves.

The J. M. Smucker Co. has initiated a market withdrawal for specific batches of Hostess Ding Dongs over a potential mold issue, as reported by food distributor and grocery operator SpartanNash.

This voluntary recall involves various sizes of Hostess Chocolate Ding Dongs, with “Best By” dates spanning from August 30 to September 3, 2025.

According to the company, the affected products include:

  • Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Single Serve (2 CT)
    • UPC: 8-88109-01002
    • Best By: August 30, 31, September 1, 2, and 3, 2025
  • Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong (10 CT)
    • UPC: 8-88109-11061
  • Hostess Chocolate Ding Dong Family Pack (16 CT)
    • UPC: 8-88109-11092

Consumers are advised not to consume the impacted items and instead return them to the store for a refund or replacement.

It’s not specified which states or stores carried the products, but SpartanNash services approximately 2,500 retail locations across the U.S. This includes about 200 of its own grocery outlets, operating under different names like Family Fare, D&W Fresh Market, and Needler’s Fresh Market. The company has branches in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.

The J.M. Smucker Co. did not immediately respond to Nexstar’s request for additional information about the recall.

“We are committed to your health and safety,” the company mentioned in a statement accompanying the SpartanNash recall notice. “We adhere to best practices to ensure the quality and safety of the products we sell. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Currently, four other grocery chains with locations in the Midwest — Kroger, Walmart, Target, and Meijer — have not listed this recall on their websites.
