You would be forgiven for thinking that a four-year-old asking for chia seeds was a scene from a Catherine Tate ‘posh family’ skit. 

Meghan Markle revealed her children’s favourite meals and that she ‘doesn’t like baking’ on the second part of her lifestyle show With Love, Meghan.

The newly released eight-part series on Netflix, which debuted just yesterday, showcases special appearances by stars such as Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, and TV personality Tan France.

In episode three of the show, the Duchess said she cooks a hot breakfast for her family most days.

‘It’s not as complicated as people think it is,’ she said. 

‘It feels like a big undertaking but you’re just slicing bread, you’re dunking it in some eggs, and calling it a day.’

When questioned on this by her guest, Queer Eye’s Tan France, she elaborates on what she likes to cook.

‘Fried eggs and pancakes, but I like to do surprise pancakes for the kids, so I always put some ground flax seeds and pour some chia seeds in.

Meghan shared that Lilibet often asks, ‘Can I have chia seeds? I want it to have freckles.’ Lili is seen in a home video alongside her brother Prince Archie and father, Prince Harry.

‘And Lili will ask me, “Can I have chia seeds? I want it to have freckles.”

‘The ritual of breakfast is a sacred time as a family. You just take a minute of calm before the day,’ she added.

People quickly took to social media to comment on the exchange. 

One Reddit user said: ‘Is it me or is it weird that a four-year-old is asking for chia seeds in her pancakes?’ 

Meghan has frequently expressed her affection for her own freckles, which may have inspired Lili’s endearing comparison of tiny, oval seeds to sun-kissed spots.

Coincidentally, a pre-made crepe mix was one of the sell-out items in Meghan’s first drop of products for As Ever, launched in April 2025.

The assortment included a variety of food items, teas, and floral sprinkles, with the full initial stock selling out in less than an hour after launching.

The product was intended to make it easier and quicker to bake crepes, reflecting Meghan’s ‘desire for a more relaxed approach to home baking’.

Many celebrities, including Dolly Parton, have released their own brand of pre-pancake mix in recent years.

Meghan, who often shares pictures of her homemade sweet treats on Instagram, spoke about her ‘special pancakes’ with People magazine.

‘I’m up before my kids are, so I’m normally up at 6:30 and then I get them up and dressed for the day and we go downstairs,’ she said. 

The Duchess described how she makes her popular pancakes, using ingredients like rainbow sprinkles, chocolate chips, or blueberries arranged in a smiley face that reveals itself when the pancakes are flipped.

‘They don’t know what’s going to be on the other side when it flips over.

The kids also enjoy toast with jam and fresh fruit preserves, a process they love because they participate in making them and gathering all the berries during the season for canning.

‘My husband and Archie both love fried eggs. There’s a lot of bacon around here. And then sometimes you don’t have time for all that, and you just put a frozen waffle in the toaster and call it a day. And there’s no shame in that either.’  

The Duchess has spoken about not filming in her own home, saying: ‘Our kitchen is where Mama just cooks for the family, and with a crew of 80-plus people, that’s a lot of people to have in your house!

Speaking to Bloomberg’s Emily Chang on The Circuit yesterday, Meghan said Lilibet also loves the US brand Annie’s mac and cheese with chia and flax seeds and broccoli from the garden.

The former Suits actress admitted that on busy days, she feeds her children frozen chicken nuggets and tater tots (mini potatoes to Brits), offering a more relatable glimpse into her approach to meal times.

The Duchess is seen baking several times throughout her show, preparing sourdough for her friend Teigen and using ready-made puff pastry to create McDonald’s apple pies with France.

But she admits to chef Christina Tosi: ‘Usually, I don’t like baking because it’s so measured.’ 

Preparing her apple pies, which she claims she used to get from McDonald’s after successful acting auditions, Meghan said: ‘Let’s get our puff pastry ready. We’re going to use pre-made, good puff pastry as opposed to making our dough from scratch.’

The Duchess adds later: ‘I love the idea of being able to rethink baking to be just a little more spontaneous.’

The first part of With Love, Meghan, pulled in 5.3million views and was in the top five per cent of Netflix shows for the first half of 2025.

Part two has received less-than-glowing reviews, having been dubbed ‘marginally less mad but more needy’ than its predecessor.

The Daily Mail’s Liz Jones branded the new season ‘staged, fake and dull’ – but unlike other critics, she commended Meghan for being ‘genuinely earnest’.

The Guardian dismissed the show as ‘so boring’ and ‘so contrived’, while The Telegraph described the Duchess as a ‘Montecito Marie Antoinette’.

Meghan and Harry signed a five-year contract reported to be worth $100million (£74,119,643) with Netflix, but it has since been replaced by a first-look deal which gives the streaming giant first refusal on any shows they create.

Netflix is also funding the couple’s Archewell Productions company.

One proposal said to have been mentioned among a long list of possibilities is a documentary marking the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death in 2027.

The Sussexes’ office this week declined to confirm or deny if that is under consideration.
