Klobuchar Calls for a National 'Assault Weapons' Ban in Wake of Minneapolis Shooting

During Wednesday’s segment of “Ana Cabrera Reports” on MSNBC, Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota expressed the urgent necessity for a national prohibition on “assault weapons” in response to a tragic shooting at a Catholic school in the state.

Klobuchar remarked, “As you mentioned, the perpetrator has died, though more information will surely emerge regarding his motives for committing such an appalling act. This incident inevitably brings to mind the ongoing efforts to outlaw these types of firearms and the challenges we’ve faced in implementing thorough background checks and preventive measures. Although we did manage to enact a modest bipartisan measure, it was insufficient to avert incidents of this nature. Contemplating the situation, without additional details on how the perpetrator obtained the gun, its legality, or its specific type, it was evidently a semi-automatic rifle, given the rapidity with which so many children were harmed.”

She further stated, “I’ve consistently emphasized this, and there will be more opportunities to discuss, but we require stronger national legislation. These laws shouldn’t be confined to individual states; there must be nationwide regulation of these assault weapons. Such firearms are meant for military forces and law enforcement, not for violent offenders such as this individual. Additionally, there is a pressing need to enhance school safety measures. I was the primary sponsor of that legislation, though we can do everything possible in that arena, with the current widespread access to guns and their prevalence in society, incidents of mass shootings are likely to persist.”
