Kizzie Davis was in the store at the time.
“It could’ve been a hostage situation. Somebody could’ve had a gun,” she said.
Davis was in the checkout line in Bronzeville, when the store’s metal security gate suddenly came down.
“I noticed a young man sprinting towards the door and saying, ‘Are you locking me in?’ At that moment, I thought to myself, ‘Oh no, they’re attempting a theft,'” Davis recounted.
Davis said at least two, possibly three, thieves wearing masks were in the store. She and others scrambled to the back, and called police.
“One of the robbers came running down the aisle we all were in, and he like brushed past us like, ‘move out the way,'” Davis said.
Davis returned to the front, and started recording, saying “this is dangerous.”
ABC7 Chicago blurred the faces of the other customers, who were forced to wait until police arrived.
Officers were initially unable to allow anyone to leave, and customers gave the manager an earful.
Eventually they made it out.
“It’s a slap in my face as a customer, like my safety was in jeopardy, and they didn’t care,” Davis said.
A 31-year-old and 25-year-old man were taken into custody.
No one was injured, police said.
