CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Champaign Township’s preliminary budget was passed with a 6-3 vote on Tuesday night, after previously being postponed due to Township supervisor Kyle Patterson’s “lack of reasoning.”

Two weeks earlier, over $100,000 in increased spending for the Strides Shelter and contractor fees had been proposed without explanation, according to several board members.

On Tuesday, board members noted more concerns arose when Patterson stated that the Strides budget would be exhausted by February 2026, at which point he would seek help from other governmental entities.

Board member Vanna Pianfetti remarked that the supervisor also indicated that the budget was largely crafted by the City’s financial staff, not by Patterson himself. This prompted Pianfetti to demand Patterson’s resignation.

“I do not believe that he is fulfilling even his statutory duties that he was elected to perform,” Pianfetti said. “It is very difficult to remove an elected official. I do believe that it would benefit the community if he were to resign.”

Pianfetti said a public hearing for the township’s budget will be held Sept. 30.
