Gas Up & Go: 'The High Life' at Selby Gardens

SARASOTA, Fla. (WSSN) — A captivating new exhibition has landed at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Downtown Sarasota location, attracting both art aficionados and bird enthusiasts.

The exhibition is perfectly situated in Selby Gardens, a haven for over 160 bird species, offering a rich, avian-friendly setting.

“It’s an ideal subject matter for us,” said Selby’s President, Jennifer Rominiecki.

Visitors can explore the gardens along pathways that are as inviting for migratory birds as they are for inquisitive guests. The garden’s diverse flora provides sustenance, shelter, and nesting resources, creating a haven for both avians and those seeking a peaceful retreat.

“Our campuses provide bayfront sanctuaries where visitors can escape daily life and reconnect with nature,” stated Rominiecki.

Roaming the vibrant landscape, visitors are mesmerized by the equally stunning photographs. Thanks to technological advancements in cameras, photographers now capture birds in unprecedented ways, enhancing the visual journey.

“The really unique part is looking at the works of art sited in the landscape,” said Rominiecki. “It’s a really unique way to look at photography and art in the context of nature.”

As visitors transition from the vibrant garden paths into the cool, contemplative spaces of the Richard and Ellen Sandor Museum, they’re met with even more compelling works — offering a quiet space to reflect and appreciate the avian artistry.

Whether you’re a birdwatcher, an art lover, or simply someone in need of a scenic escape, this exhibit offers something truly special. “The Highlife – Contemporary Photography and the Birds” runs through September 14th at the Selby Gardens Downtown Sarasota campus
