Governor Henry McMaster has directed that flags in South Carolina be flown at half-staff throughout the weekend to pay tribute to the victims of the deadly shooting that occurred on Wednesday at a church school in Minneapolis.

“Peggy and I are united with all South Carolinians and people nationwide in extending our prayers to the victims, their families, and all those who have been affected by this horrific event,” he stated.

The governor’s decision followed President Trump’s announcement on August 27, which called for the United States flag to be lowered until sunset on August 31. This act of lowering the flag is meant as a gesture of respect for both the deceased and the injured, as well as their families.

The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday morning when a 23-year-old gunman began shooting from outside Annunciation Catholic School. The attack resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 17 individuals who were attending a mass for the new school year. Authorities have identified the shooter as Robin Westman, who reportedly died by suicide.

Consequently, Governor McMaster instructed that flags atop the state Capitol be lowered to half-staff and urged state agencies and political subdivisions to similarly adjust the flags on their buildings.
