A Texas woman has pleaded guilty to murder a year after she viciously stabbed her mother to death while acting as her caregiver.

Rachel Zamarripa, 22, pleaded guilty nearly a year after she called 911, admitting to killing her 58-year-old mother, Linda Zamarripa. On August 31, 2024, she informed dispatchers of the stabbing. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar mentioned in a press briefing following the event that responders encountered a “horrific” scene at the Zamarripa residence, with Linda Zamarripa suffering “well over a couple dozen” stab wounds.

“The knife was still lodged in her chest when first responders arrived,” Salazar said.

The older woman was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Salazar elaborated on Rachel Zamarripa’s reasons for the attack, citing the burden she felt as her mother’s caregiver and the family’s primary breadwinner. “She appears to have reached her breaking point,” remarked Salazar. According to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office press release, her frustration stemmed from her mother’s restricted mobility.

During a press conference after Linda Zamarripa’s death, Salazar took the chance to raise awareness about domestic violence, emphasizing the existence of public resources for those seeking assistance before situations become dire.

“The hotline staff are equipped with information on available resources,” he noted. “They can provide shelter for you, your children, and even your pets. Your children can remain in school, and they offer job placement support, providing comprehensive assistance.”

On Wednesday, Rachel Zamarripa was sentenced to 30 years in prison, according to court records.
