SAVANNAH, Ga. () — The Long County football team defeated Johnson, 28-7, on Aug. 28 to pick up its second win of the season at Savannah High Stadium.

Long County struck first, capitalizing on a turnover by Johnson. The Atom Smashers fumbled the opening kickoff, and three plays later, the Blue Tide took the lead. Jason Familia connected with Wesley Williams for the touchdown and a 6-0 lead following a missed PAT.

The score remained 6-0 early in the third quarter until Johnson made a comeback. Quarterback Shamari King managed to reach the edge and score, tying the game. Johnson then took a 7-6 lead after executing a successful PAT.

Long County took control of the game after losing the lead. The Blue Tied scored the final 21 points of the contest.

“We are who we are,” stated Long County head coach Michael Pfiester. “We don’t need to pretend to be something else. We just need to play physically and execute our plays. We have to stick to what we’ve been coached to do, though some of our guys sometimes try to do it their own way.”

“We got a bit fatigued,” Johnson head coach Steven Smith remarked, “but we battled today. We stumbled but got back on our feet. We just missed chances. We fought till the end, and that’s the kind of football team I aspire to coach. I want to coach a team that never gives up.”

Next up for Long County is a Sept. 5 home date with Groves. As for Johnson, they will travel to Islands on Sept. 5.
