A North Carolina elected official was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly lacing his two granddaughters’ ice cream with drugs.

On August 8, James Yokeley, 66, reportedly approached Wilmington police at a Sheetz gas station, claiming that his granddaughters discovered two pills in their Blizzard desserts from a nearby Dairy Queen. However, authorities stated that surveillance footage revealed Yokeley himself had placed the pills in the children’s ice cream, according to WITN.

The girls did not ingest the pills — which tested positive for MDMA and cocaine, WECT reported..

The owner of the Dairy Queen informed WECT that Yokeley visited the establishment on August 3 — five days before contacting the police — and purchased Blizzards for his granddaughters. At the time, four employees were reportedly present.

The owner said police came to her establishment on August 8 to request surveillance footage.

“Thank goodness we had video,” she commented.

Yokeley faced charges of contaminating food or drink with a controlled substance, child abuse, and possession of Schedule I narcotics. As reported by WECT, he stepped down on Thursday from his role as chair of the Surry County Board of Elections, a position he had been elected to in July.

“With full reliance on the truth and facts, I remain hopeful and prayerfully confident that I will be cleared of all allegations,” Yokeley stated in a letter addressed to Auditor Dave Boliek, who had earlier called for Yokeley’s resignation.

According to Port City Daily, Yokeley’s bond was set at $100,000. The pills purportedly found in his granddaughters’ Blizzards have been sent to a state lab for further testing.
