WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has terminated U.S. Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a senior advisor of Harris who spoke to NBC News on Friday.

“The Vice President extends her appreciation to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and steadfast commitment to security,” stated the advisor.

A senior White House official confirmed that Trump cut off Harris’ Secret Service detail, pointing out that vice presidents typically receive only six months of protection after leaving office.

In 2008, Congress enacted a law granting the Secret Service the authority to safeguard former vice presidents, their spouses, and their children under 16 for up to six months post-office.

A Secret Service representative informed NBC that even though this is true, President Joe Biden issued an executive memorandum in January that extended Harris’ protection to 18 months.

The decision was first reported by CNN.

Earlier this year, Trump announced that he was terminating Secret Service protection for Biden’s two adult children, Hunter and Ashley. Biden.

By federal law, the Secret Service is obligated to offer lifelong protection to former presidents and their spouses unless they refuse it. The agency is also entitled to protect the former presidents’ children until the age of 16.
