Federal health authorities have reported that since January, over 95 individuals across more than a dozen states have fallen ill due to a salmonella outbreak linked to eggs that have been recalled.

Country Eggs LLC, located in Lucerne Valley, California, has ceased production and recalled its large brown cage-free eggs, branded as “sunshine yolks” or “omega-3 golden yolks.” These eggs were marketed under the names Nagatoshi Produce, Mishuo, and Nijiya Markets and were identifiable by the code CA 7695, with sell-by dates ranging from July 1 to September 16.

The outbreak, which began affecting individuals between January 7 and July 25, has spread to at least 14 states, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with 18 hospitalized cases. The CDC suggests that the actual number of affected individuals might be higher and that the egg distribution could extend to other states.

The states impacted include Pennsylvania, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, California, and Hawaii.

An investigation pinpointing where affected individuals obtained or consumed their eggs led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to trace the supplier to Country Eggs LLC, according to officials.

The recalled eggs were available at grocery stores and through food service distributors. Consumers are urged to inspect their refrigerators, and any identified eggs should be discarded or returned to their point of purchase for a refund.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration and stomach cramps. Most people who get sick recover within a week. Infections can be severe in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, who may require hospitalization.
