Family of slain Chicago woman asks Trump to invest in city

CHICAGO — The parents of an 18-year-old woman from Chicago, who was tragically killed in 2014, are urging President Donald Trump to reconsider sending the National Guard to the city. Instead, they are advocating for investments in gun control measures and antiviolence programs.

“Please reconsider,” stated Milagros, the mother of Alexandria Burgos, in response to Trump’s intentions to cut funding for antiviolence projects. “Countless families, not only in Chicago, have had their loved ones taken from them. They endure this trauma, the absence, and the emptiness every day… I urge you to rethink it.”

Alexandria’s father, Rafael, agreed.

She emphasized, “These antiviolence programs make a real impact. Over the past three years, with these initiatives in place, gun-related crimes and violence have significantly decreased. It’s a proven fact: we don’t need the National Guard, just more resources.”

Alexandria’s life was cut short in October 2014. Her family commemorates her memory every fall by hosting an annual harvest festival in partnership with Aspira High School, inspired by her affection for the autumn season.

Although a decade has passed since Alexandria’s death, with her case still unsolved, her family tirelessly transforms their grief into active efforts against gun violence.

They support legislation that would require cold cases to be reassigned to a new detective after three years.
