Kamala Harris' Secret Service protection revoked by Trump

(NewsNation) President Donald Trump has discontinued former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service detail, which had been extended by former President Joe Biden, according to a White House official who spoke to NewsNation on Friday.

Harris was entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office as required by federal law, with this period concluding on July 21. However, her protection had been prolonged for an additional year via a directive discreetly signed by Biden shortly before finishing his term, a Harris team member informed NewsNation.

That extension was suspended by the Trump administration this week, according to a letter obtained by CNN.

“You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris,” the letter stated.

Security protections for Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, ended July 21, the Harris team member said.

The ending of Harris’ security detail aligns with her upcoming multicity book tour to promote her new memoir, “107 Days,” slated for release on Sept. 23.

In March, Trump terminated the Secret Service protection details for Biden’s adult children, which the former president had extended to July as he was leaving office in January.

Under federal law, former presidents and their spouses are granted lifelong Secret Service protection, but such protection for their immediate family members over the age of 16 ceases when they exit office.

Outgoing presidents can extend protection for those who might otherwise not be eligible for up to six months after they leave office, a provision Trump also directed for his family after leaving office in 2021. Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush also extended protection for family members for a period.
