The Jackson Theatre in Jonesborough, Tennessee, is marking its 80th anniversary by hosting film screenings, live music, and a raffle event on Sunday night.

The theatre was first opened in 1945 and closed in the early 1960s. It reopened just last year as an old-fashioned venue for movies and concerts.

Assistant operations director Lori Powell said, “We feature both classic and modern films. Our theatre is home to many community events, and we collaborate with various organizations, including storytelling groups and the McKinney Center.”

This weekend, the theatre is commemorating its founding by showing movies that debuted at the theatre 80 years ago.

“This week, we are running films all from the 1940s that actually were shown here the first week the Jackson opened,” Powell said.

On Sunday, which marks the exact anniversary, the theatre will hold “Jackpot Night.” This event will include a tour, a showing of “The Kasan,” followed by a raffle and a reception.

Powell added, “The day kicks off with a historical tour of the theatre and a documentary about its renovations. Attendees can participate in a free raffle with the chance to win up to 30 prizes, and there’s a reception afterward.”

Powell hopes this week can bring some nostalgia to Jonesborough through the silver screen.

“This celebration is about community and evoking nostalgia,” Powell stated. “People can relive memories of movies they saw in their youth and share that with their grandchildren. Each screening is made into a special event for everyone.”

Tickets to the Jackpot Night are pay-what-you-want, and the screening of “The Kasan” begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
