A man accused of murdering and dumping his wife’s body in a Southern California forest was arrested in Peru and will be extradited to the US.

According to WCAX, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported on Wednesday that the Consulate General of Peru has stated Jossimar Cabrera, 36, turned himself in in Lima.

“The extradition process for Cabrera to the United States will take several months. However, he will remain in custody in Peru until this extradition is completed, as there is a current order in place. Official correspondence is still awaited,” according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s statement.

Sheylla Gutierrez, 33, was reported missing on August 12.

Following her disappearance, Cabrera allegedly provided varying explanations about Gutierrez’s location. He purportedly suggested she might have been detained by ICE, left with another person, or been involved in an accident, according to her sister.

Previous Video Coverage

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Cabrera was seen dragging something large wrapped in a greenish material outside the couple’s home.

The searchers found Gutierrez’s body the next day, wrapped in what appeared to be similar to the material seen in the video.

By that time, Cabrera had fled the country with their three children.

Gutierrez’s mother, Helga Rocillo, stated that Cabrera has a past of domestic violence in Peru, and her daughter intended to press charges against him prior to her disappearance.

“She mentioned to me that Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo abused her physically and even hit my youngest grandchild, who is just 3 years old,” Rocillo told the Los Angeles Times.

“I called my daughter, but she didn’t answer. I spoke to Josimar on Sunday, and he told me that immigration had taken my daughter.”

An autopsy is being performed and will hopefully be released shortly to determine Gutierrez’s official cause of death.
