DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The search for a Decatur man accused of a deadly stabbing is over, police announced.

Deputy Police Chief Scott Rosenberry announced that Latonian Johnson, 50, was taken into custody on Friday at a residence in Decatur. He faced an arrest warrant charging him with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Johnson is alleged to have fatally stabbed Dawnette Sigmon, his intermittent girlfriend, who was 38 years old. He also reportedly stabbed her two teenage children when they intervened to protect their mother. The teens received medical attention at a hospital and were subsequently released.

After spending 10 days evading police, Johnson was captured, with Crime Stoppers having offered a $5,000 reward for tips leading to his arrest. The pursuit concluded with his arrest at 7:44 p.m. on Friday.

Authorities noted that Johnson was treated at a local hospital for self-inflicted injuries sustained before his arrest, prior to being lodged at the Macon County Jail.

Despite Johnson’s arrest, the investigation into Sigmon’s death continues. Those with additional information are urged to reach out to the Decatur Police Department Investigations Division at 217-424-2734 or contact Detective Kaylor at 217-542-3414.
