KABUL – A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border late Sunday, resulting in some injuries. Details on the extent of the damage were not immediately accessible.

The earthquake occurred at 11:47 p.m. and was centered 27 kilometers (17 miles) east-northeast of Jalalabad city in Nangarhar province, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It had a depth of just 8 kilometers (5 miles). Shallower earthquakes are generally more destructive.

Naqibullah Rahimi, a spokesman for the Nangarhar Public Health Department, said 15 people were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.

A 4.5 magnitude quake occurred some 20 minutes later in the same province.

On October 7, 2023, Afghanistan experienced a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, followed by significant aftershocks. The Taliban government estimated the death toll to be at least 4,000 people.

The U.N. gave a far lower death toll of about 1,500. It was the deadliest natural disaster to strike Afghanistan in recent memory.
