Girls-only DJ camp coming back to Urbana for the fifth year

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A Central Illinois DJ is passing on her skills for the fifth year in a row.

The She Spins DJ Camp in Urbana is back for another year, catering to girls aged 10 to 17. This year marks an exciting change as the camp will extend to a two-week duration for the first time.

Week one is for camp alumni who will come back to brush up their skills. During the second week, they’ll help mentor new campers.

Participants will learn essential DJ skills, such as mixing, blending, and music counting. The camp’s founder recalls her own difficulties starting as a DJ and is now dedicated to providing girls with a smoother journey.

“I want them to have an easier experience learning how to DJ. When I started, it was challenging. I often had to seek help and learn on my own,” said Ja’Naea Modest, the owner and organizer of She Spins.

The camp is scheduled for Sept. 8-18, culminating in a showcase on Sept. 19 at Urbana’s Gallery Art Bar. Each participant will perform a five-minute DJ set, and the event is open to the community.
