1 dead after planes collide at Colorado airport

() One person was killed and another hospitalized Sunday when two small aircraft collided mid-air at a northeastern Colorado airport, officials said.

The FAA reported that a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 collided while both planes were attempting to land at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport around noon local time. There were two individuals on board each aircraft, according to the FAA, which will conduct an investigation in conjunction with the National Transportation Safety Board.

What happened at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport?

Following the collision, both planes crashed and caught fire, as noted by the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office in a statement. The individuals aboard the Cessna sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the airport. However, one of the passengers in the other aircraft was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities confirmed.

The second person on the other plane was taken to a local hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic accident,” officials stated. “Furthermore, we express our gratitude to the citizens who assisted in efforts to extinguish the fire until the arrival of the fire department and first responders.”

No additional details were released.

Fort Morgan is about 80 miles northeast of Denver.
