Authorities are investigating a suspicious death at the annual Burning Man festival in northern Nevada after a man was found in a “pool of blood” just as the event was concluding.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening according to Pershing County officials. The man’s identity has not been released to the public. Burning Man is a yearly weeklong event hosted in the Black Rock Desert, situated roughly 100 miles east of Reno. Thousands of attendees come together to create a temporary city, participating in various artistic, performance, and expressive activities. The festival’s highlight is the burning of a massive wooden statue shaped like a man.

The man was discovered around 9:14 p.m., coinciding with the start of the statue’s burning. A festival-goer reportedly notified authorities about a man lying in a pool of blood.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office deputies, along with Bureau of Land Management rangers, swiftly arrived at the campsite, finding a deceased white male adult on the ground, according to their statement. Law enforcement officials, along with Black Rock Rangers from the Burning Man Project, secured the area and commenced an investigation.

Festival organizers say they are working with investigators to uncover what happened.

Burning Man officials have stated they are working with law enforcement, according to a statement on Sunday. The investigation remains active, with the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office leading the inquiries. Participants in Black Rock City have been advised not to impede law enforcement efforts.

Since the creation of Burning Man in 1986, a number of deaths have occurred at the festival. Last year, a woman was found on the first day after dying from an asthma attack in her sleep, and in 2023 a man is believed to have died from apparent drug intoxication, the Reno Gazette Journal reported. In 2018, a man died after running into the Burning Man structure fire, and in 2014, a woman was fatally struck by an art car at the event.

Saturday’s death appears to be the first time a fatality at the festival has been investigated as a homicide.
