Birmingham City has shown its fans an early glimpse of what the replacement for St. Andrew’s might look like, revealing concept images of an advanced stadium planned to open by the 2029/30 season.

The Championship side, whose spiritual home has stood since 1906, is planning a ground that could cost up to £3bn.

The new design is set to increase the stadium’s capacity from 29,409 to an impressive 62,000, positioning it as the eighth-largest in England, slightly surpassing Anfield’s 61,276 and just 850 seats behind Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The club has shared footage depicting a modern, “spaceship”-like external design in Birmingham’s iconic blue, with “BLUES” prominently visible around the structure. The stadium is expected to feature ample green spaces and rooftop areas for fans to relax before matches.

Nick Smith, Birmingham City’s Head of Infrastructure, provided insights on the proposed designs, noting that the new stadium will also accommodate large non-football events.

He stressed, however, that the final design remains “subject to change.”

Despite the impressive visuals, Birmingham City’s focus remains on their on-field performance, as they’ll need to be competitive enough to fill the seats of this futuristic venue when it opens. Without success on the pitch, the abundant rooftop bars and green spaces may not be enough to attract crowds.
