A faith leader called for unity after a 14-year-old girl was shot and killed in Brunswick Saturday night.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The Brunswick community is mourns the death of a 14-year-old girl who authorities said was shot and killed Saturday night.

Reverend Abra Lattany-Reed, who hails from Brunswick and holds a position of leadership in the South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, characterized the situation as one rife with “heartache and tragedy.” She mentions that the pain reverberates far beyond the immediate vicinity.

“We are a community filled with love and faith, one that supports each other,” Lattany-Reed explained. “This impacts the larger community as it forces us to contemplate and pray while acknowledging the need for action regarding gun violence and public safety.”

Authorities said the shooting occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on the 2700 block of Altama Avenue. Authorities said two suspects have been arrested.

The first individual, 17-year-old Daquarius Wallace, is accused of improperly handling a gun, leading to the girl’s death. He now faces charges that include murder, child cruelty, unlawful possession of a firearm as a minor, and reckless behavior.

The second individual, 21-year-old Bobby Sullivan, is charged with offenses such as child cruelty, possession of stolen property, reckless conduct, and instigating a child into unlawful acts.

Lattany-Reed expresses the hope that this tragic event will initiate dialogue and measures for neighborhood safety. “I hope this encourages the larger community to engage in discussions about how we can ensure all neighborhoods are safe and thriving,” she stated.

Both individuals remain detained, while the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office continues the investigation. We contacted the Sheriff’s Office to gain more insight into the suspects.
