CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — For many in Central Illinois, a day off work doubles as an occasion to honor hard work. Labor Day signals the end of summer, as well as Champaign County’s yearly Labor Day Parade celebration.

The streets filled with onlookers, and the parade featured a variety of participants. Local businesses, school bands, union members, and the Marching Illini were all part of the lineup.

“It’s a tribute to all things labor. It represents the years of hard work and the battles to provide people with a decent livelihood and secure lives,” said Erik Davis, a union worker from Ironworkers Local 380.

The streets were filled with people as the annual Labor Day Parade in Champaign County kicked off around 11 a.m. on Monday.

There were some people who had attended the parade for many years, and even four-legged friends that were eager to watch.

While many children at the parade were excited about the candy, others saw the day beyond sweets and breaks from work and school, viewing it as a significant, personal occasion.

“It changed everything. The union was the best decision I have ever made,” Davis said.

He has been a member of Champaign’s Ironworkers Local Union for almost two decades. He said that it has given him so much.

“It paid me to go to school and taught me all the things I know,” Davis added.

The United States began marking Labor Day in the 19th Century amid tough times for American workers. Davis reflected on the origins of this national holiday and its ongoing relevance.

“It’s about creating safe working environments and knowledgeable employees that are skilled in their crafts and trades,” Davis said.

The parade is another opportunity for him and his crew to remember.

“In my union, we have a strong sense of brotherhood. So, any opportunity to be with my fellow members is fantastic. I truly appreciate my union brothers,” Davis said.

After the parade was over, there was a picnic in Neil Street Plaza. People ate food, kids enjoyed bounce houses, and music was playing.
