(The Hill) Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was discharged from the hospital on Monday following treatment for injuries sustained in a car accident in New Hampshire over the weekend, according to his son.

“I’m glad to share that he was released from the hospital today. He’s up and walking, thankfully,” stated the former mayor’s son, Andrew Giuliani, on the New York City-area radio show “Cats & Cosby.”

The younger Giuliani said his father suffered a fractured vertebra and “he’s in a lot of pain.”

“But as you all know, Rudy Giuliani is among the toughest, so it’s quite overwhelming, especially hearing the news just about thirty minutes ago that President Trump intends to nominate him for a Medal of Freedom. Just two days ago, I was worried about whether he would still be with us,” he continued.

The former New York City mayor, who went on to become President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, was critically injured in a car accident on Saturday in New Hampshire, as reported by his security team. Giuliani’s car was struck “from behind at high speed,” according to Michael Ragusa, his chief of security.

A statement indicated that Giuliani was admitted to a local trauma center where he was found to have a fractured thoracic vertebra, along with several lacerations and bruises, in addition to injuries to his left arm and lower leg.

On Monday, Trump announced that Giuliani would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s most prestigious civilian award, lauding him as “the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot.”
