During a conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, they made a curious comment about organ transplants potentially extending human life to 150 years. However, this claim was quickly refuted by a leading U.S. transplant expert.

Following Reuters’ coverage of this unusual dialogue on Wednesday, transplant surgeon Dr. James Markmann expressed to Fox News Digital that Putin and Xi should prioritize issues like ethics and fair access to organs instead.

This exchange occurred as Putin and Xi walked with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un during a military parade celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Beijing.

While heading to a platform to view the event at Tiananmen Square, Putin’s interpreter was overheard stating in Chinese: “Biotechnology is continuously developing.”

Putin later confirmed to reporters in China that their conversation revolved around the science of longevity and prospective medical advancements. He has a history of interest in anti-aging research.

In 2024, Putin initiated the establishment of a government-supported research institute named New Health Preservation Technologies, concentrating on areas like cellular rejuvenation, neurotechnology, and organ regeneration.

His daughter, endocrinologist Maria Vorontsova, has also received state grants for cell renewal and genetics research.

Xi has been less directly linked to longevity projects, but Beijing has positioned biotechnology as a central pillar of China’s economic and strategic growth.

“I won’t comment on the private musings of world leaders, but we must remember that more than 100,000 individuals in the United States are currently awaiting lifesaving organ transplants,” concluded Markmann.

“The ethical concern isn’t immortality but equity, access, and making sure organs save lives today.”
