LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga () – International Paper recently announced the closure of its Riceboro and Savannah plants, a decision affecting over 1,000 employees.

Now, the Liberty County Development Authority (LCDA) is stepping in to help those without a job.

“It is a dramatic impact,” said Malissa Mackay, LCDA vice president of business development said.

The facilities will cease operations by the month’s end. According to Mackay, around 300 jobs from Riceboro’s containerboard and timber and lumber mills are expected to be impacted, with 40% of those workers residing in Liberty County.

“We’ve received feedback from employees in Riceboro, and they are particularly concerned with finding new opportunities, especially those who have dedicated 20 to 30 years to the plant,” she explained. “Transitioning to a new job is challenging.”

To aid the affected workers, LCDA is collaborating with local government officials, WorkSource Coastal Georgia, Savannah Technical College, and Regional Industry Support Enterprise (RISE).

“The day of the announcement, we received so many calls, text, and emails of folks in the community who were ready to help,” Mackay said.

During the job fair, job seekers will have the chance to interact directly with hiring managers, submit applications, conduct on-site interviews, and receive assistance with resumes and job searching. LCDA is also ensuring a smooth transition by working in close collaboration with International Paper.

“They provided valuable feedback on structuring the job fair to better serve the employees,” she noted. “Even the timing of the fair took their input into account, ensuring coverage for various work shifts.”

She continued, “it’s absolutely it is a win-win-win for job seekers, for employers, for the community.  job seekers will be able to connect with employers who are ready to hire right now.”

The job fair takes place Wednesday from 4- 7:30 p.m. at the Riceboro Youth Center.
