() Two people have died after falling from a glacier in southeastern Alaska within a matter of days.

The Alaska Department of Public Safety, State Troopers recently reported the deaths of Thomas Casey, 69, from Arizona, and an unspecified Italian citizen.

State troopers were alerted on Aug. 31 that Casey was overdue after a hiking trip in Juneau. He was last spotted on Aug. 30, and just two days later, Juneau Mountain Rescue and SEAdogs discovered him.

Casey’s death resulted from injuries sustained in a fall. His remains were located near the Mendenhall Glacier, which extends nearly 14 miles. The body has been transferred to the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

On Tuesday, the Italian man fell into a stream on Mendenhall Glacier and was pushed into a vertical opening in the ice.

At the time of the accident, he was accompanied by two other people. The Juneau Mountain Rescue team arrived at the scene but concluded that it was “too dangerous” to proceed with locating him immediately.
