The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the homeowner was detained for questioning.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A homeowner in Jacksonville’s Brentwood area fatally shot a man who, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, was allegedly attempting to break into the residence early on Friday morning.
JSO Sgt. M.W. Highfill said around 3:45 a.m., officers responded to the shooting on North Pearl Street.
When officers arrived on scene, Highfill said they found a man who had been shot multiple times.
JFRD crews arrived on scene and pronounced the man dead, Highfill said.
The shooting is still under investigation, but Highfill said investigators believe the man shot was trying to break into the home.
“Currently, we understand that an individual was potentially committing a burglary at the property during the incident, and the homeowner, acting in self-defense, shot the intruder inside his home,” stated Highfill.
One person, the homeowner, has been detained for questioning, Highfill said.
Highfill added that the exact relationship between the homeowner and the deceased man is currently unknown, and initial indications suggest that the man did gain entry into the house.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact JSO’s non-emergency line at 904-630-0500. To share details anonymously, reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
