OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) The Oklahoma City Zoo has welcomed a new member to its animal family.

The Zoo announced that a female okapi calf was born on Sunday, August 24, in the okapi barn of Expedition Africa. Her parents are Kayin and Bosomi.

“We’ve been eagerly awaiting the birth of this little calf and are thrilled that she’s here, healthy and strong,” explained OKC Zoo’s Curator of Hoofstock, Bill Smith. “Okapi are endangered, so this calf represents a new generation vital to the overall population. We look forward to seeing her thrive alongside her parents.”

Officials say the new calf and her mom are doing well. They will soon have access to the outdoor habitat, weather permitting.

“Okapi are extremely rare, beautiful animals that we have proudly been caring for, helping conserve, and connecting Oklahomans to for decades,” stated OKC Zoo’s Executive Director and CEO, Dwight Lawson. “I am excited for guests to form a connection with our newest okapi ambassador.”
