'A lifelong hobby': Archers of all ages learning new sport, building community in Our Town Newman

The town of Newman in Illinois is being highlighted by WCIA as part of their ‘Our Town Newman’ series, showcasing the special attributes of this community in Douglas County, including its distinct archery program.

At the community center, three coaches from the East Central Illinois Archers group gather weekly with people of all ages. Over the past decade, the team has expanded from just six participants to 18 young competitors.

Daniel Wagner, the head coach, shares, “Archery is a sport where you can invest what you desire and reap the rewards you wish. It can become a lifelong pastime.”

Justin Smith, another coach, noted that his daughter had already received 14 archery scholarship offers as a high school freshman. She’s not alone, as many young archers discover their passion early on.

Titus Smith, a fellow archer, shared, “I especially enjoy 3D archery. It simulates a hunting experience and offers the chance to connect with many talented individuals.”

“I like the barebow because my grandpa studied Native Americans, and that relates to that. That’s pretty much why I like archery,” Knox Foster said.

If you’re interested in trying it out, you can stop by practices on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Newman Community Center.
