Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short talk about sleuthing skills and secrets in 'Only Murders in the Building' season 5

Get your sleuthing skills ready. Season five of “Only Murders in the Building” is here!

In the previous season, we left Mabel, Charles, and Oliver, portrayed by Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, as they discovered the body of Lester, the cherished Arconia doorman. As the fifth season kicks off, they embark on a quest to uncover clues and solve the mystery.

“We delve into the world of classic criminals, the mob, and find out that there’s now a different mob that has replaced the old one, which isn’t as effective as it once was at eliminating people,” Martin shared with On The Red Carpet.

Lester, as it’s revealed, has known our trio for years and there are lots of nostalgic moments through the season.

“It was great to see a little of the backstory for all our characters, truly. I mean, seeing their younger versions and how they got to where they are,” said Gomez. “For Mabel, in particular, her relationship with our doorman, Lester, is really lovely. You can really feel the significance it had for her.”

“Playing these scenes is a joy because they’re well-crafted. When you’re an actor performing in a well-written scene, it makes for a fantastic day,” Short commented.

What else makes this season stand out? An impressive lineup of special guest stars, featuring Renee Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, Logan Lerman, Beanie Feldstein, Dianne Wiest, Tea Leoni, Keegan-Michael Key, Bobby Cannavale, and numerous others. Michael Cyril Creighton, who plays Howard, expressed how delightful it was to work amidst such a star-studded cast.

“I like to joke that it’s an honor to be the least famous person on our show,” he quipped. “Watching them portray such thrilling and unexpected characters, different from what I’m typically accustomed to, is a real treat.”

“It’s the dream job. I couldn’t be luckier, I couldn’t be happier. This surpasses my wildest dreams of where I would be,” Creighton continued. “I’m so happy every time I walk on that set. It’s the nicest job in showbiz.”

Gomez suggested that viewers and sleuthers should keep an eye out for the little details throughout the series to help them figure out whodunit.

“There’s (sic) these little nuggets that you don’t realize are woven into the story until much later so, I guess, it’s really about paying attention to the story,” she said.

“I mean right around episode six or seven, you start seeing the plot lines that have been set up earlier starting to come together, to mesh together and then finally in episode ten…it all comes together and set up another possible murder,” added Martin slyly.

“What are you saying? What are you saying? I know you just said something,” Short interjected, picking up on Martin’s hint of a new season.

“No, I didn’t say anything,” denied Martin.

While we wait for a new season announcement, you can watch season five of “Only Murders in the Building.” The first three episodes premiere September 9 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+. New episodes will drop weekly.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
