Blue city police blasted for ‘embarrassing’ tips to robbery victims as crime spikes, veteran officer says

Following a surge in violent robberies in Chicago during August, law enforcement in the city provided guidance for robbery victims. However, an ex-NYPD officer criticized the advice shared with potential future victims.

According to a memo from the Chicago Police Department, there were eight cases of violent robberies reported in areas such as Grant Park, New Eastside, and the Loop.

The memo detailed that each robbery involved the suspect or suspects targeting individuals who were alone and unsuspecting in park areas, forcibly taking their belongings. Notably, a gold chain or necklace was stolen in each case.

The ex-officer questioned the recommendation for individuals to remain calm and seek out witnesses while faced with an armed threat, remarking that the only thing visible would be the gun itself.

To better handle the issue, DeFazio suggested the introduction of community patrols to identify risky neighborhoods and potential troublemakers, reminiscent of the “stop and frisk” policies from the early 2000s, where officers conducted searches for weapons.

He criticized the police for their reactive rather than proactive approach, stating, “That’s why the police aren’t doing well in Chicago. They react to crime instead of preventing it. They’re not doing anything preventative.”

DeFazio also emphasized appearing as nonthreatening as possible during a robbery.

“If someone’s got a gun pointed at you, don’t move,” he said. “Keep your hands down. Don’t make any sudden movements. Do exactly what they say. That’s what they should be telling you.”

The Chicago Police Department did not return a comment request.
