In Colorado, a man insists he “accidentally” shot his wife in the chest as he was “clearing his gun” and then “performed CPR for nearly an hour” before eventually calling 911 to inform authorities, according to police reports.

David O’Grady, 36, is charged with domestic violence and first-degree murder following the September 7 incident at their residence in the 5200 block of Shawnee Way in Aurora, based on court documents and information from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

His wife, Taylor Dawn Last, 29, was discovered deceased inside the home when officers arrived Sunday morning at around 7:45 a.m., as detailed in O’Grady’s arrest affidavit.

O’Grady reportedly informed a 911 dispatcher that while he was “clearing his gun the previous night,” he unintentionally fired the weapon, hitting his wife in the chest, according to the affidavit seen by Law&Crime on Wednesday.

“He attempted CPR for about an hour before calling 911,” the document says.

The couple’s two young children, aged 6 and 4, were in the house, and O’Grady’s mother was present as well. “Upon arrival at the scene, David stated that the victim had been deceased for several hours,” the affidavit indicates.

O’Grady let the cops inside the couple’s Aurora home and they found Last “lying on her back on the ground, with her left arm on her chest,” the affidavit states. “Taylor’s body was cold and stiff to the touch, indicating that Taylor had been dead for a while,” police allege.

Authorities questioned O’Grady about what happened and he allegedly admitted that he and Last “had been in a verbal argument.” As the fight unfolded, “David said he knew the gun was loaded, fired a round into the bed, and then, as Taylor was coming into the room, aimed it in Taylor’s direction and pulled the trigger,” according to the affidavit.

The bullet struck Last in the chest and she died from her injuries, police say.

The couple’s two kids were in a “shared bedroom” upstairs when the shooting happened, across a “narrow hallway” from their parents’ room, cops report. The children allegedly told investigators that they heard “loud arguing” and a “bang” that caused them to “jump” out of bed, the affidavit says.

The kids said they saw O’Grady “had thrown something” at Last and then she fell “onto the bed with her hands up in the air,” the affidavit alleges. “Broken colorful things” were allegedly observed on the ground, with “none” of the “broken” items being there when police arrived, cops say.

Last’s aunt, who has started a GoFundMe, describes her niece’s slaying as “an unimaginable tragedy” and “tragic act of domestic violence” that now leaves her two children without their mom and dad.

“She was a loving mother to her two beautiful little girls,” the fundraiser says, noting that the 4-year-old’s birthday is Wednesday. “The unthinkable happened — their father was responsible for her death, and he is now incarcerated. This leaves these sweet girls without both of their parents.”

Police officials told Law&Crime on Tuesday that O’Grady was in custody awaiting his first court hearing. He’s due to appear on Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m., per online records.
