Border Report Live: Supreme Court lifts restrictions on LA immigration stops

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) According to Pedro Rios, immigration officers are focusing on easily accessible targets when they conduct raids at places like Home Depots, construction zones, and other informal employment locations to apprehend undocumented migrants.

Rios, who leads the American Friends Service Committee’s U.S.-Mexico Border Program, noted that a recent Supreme Court decision has given validation to these contentious strategies by allowing agents to stop individuals solely based on race, language, job, or location.

This Monday, the Supreme Court removed a temporary legal hold imposed by a judge who had previously determined that agents were making random stops in the Los Angeles area.

During Border Report Live, Rios discussed with correspondent Salvador Rivera the Supreme Court decision and its implications for Southern California communities. He mentioned that these strategies have been deployed before and voiced concerns that the ruling could weaken the legal protections many believe they have.

Other immigrant advocacy groups have said the ruling does not uphold the law or make our nation safer.

The Border Network for Human Rights, situated in El Paso, released a statement expressing that Latino communities throughout the United States are enduring an “unprecedented and unconstitutional campaign of abuse, resulting in widespread fear and panic.”

“Let’s be clear: this situation has surpassed immigration enforcement,” stated BNHR. “It has turned into state-endorsed persecution of Latino groups. … Such actions allow racial profiling, split families, and weaken the constitutional safeguards that protect us all against authoritarianism.”

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called the Supreme Court’s stay “a win for the safety and security of the American people and the rule of law.”

“Our brave @DHSGov law enforcement will continue our operations in LA to remove the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens that pose a danger to public safety,” Noem tweeted on Monday. “Make America Safe Again!”
